How can we get a rat out into the open?

A few rats have gotten into our basement. We have set traps and gotten a few, but they're still there. They're down there with our dogs and we've decided that if the traps haven't been working, we might as well take a few out by ourselves. We're pretty quick so them running isn't the big problem. There are huge signs in our basement where the rats are probably hiding around, but we cannot get in there quick enough to get the rats. Any help you can give us is appreciated.

There will continue being rats until you find out how they got into the basement, and close up the entrance.
But you also have to get rid of the rats.
Rats are wary of anything new. They may not approach a rat trap for a few days. You might want to put some baited traps but NOT set them until the first bait has been taken. Then set the traps and bait them for real.
The best solution to kill rats humanely and effectively is the Rat Zapper. It is not cheap [$30+] but it will last a really long time. It electrocutes the rat when it goes for the bait; it won't harm larger animals like dogs and cats. Besides, it is like a box and only rats or mice will want to go into it. Once a rat has gone into it, other rats will follow. When you catch a rat, you dump it out, toss the bait back in, and set the trap again.
