The concentration of HCl in hydrochloric acid is reduced to 12% of its initial value by dilution. What is the difference in the pH values of the two solutions?

Initial concentration of H₃O⁺ = [H₃O⁺]ₒ
Final concentration of H₃O⁺ = 12% × [H₃O⁺]ₒ

pH = -log[H₃O⁺]

Difference in pH
= {-log(12% × [H₃O⁺]ₒ)} - {-log[H₃O⁺]ₒ}
= -log(0.12) - log[H₃O⁺]ₒ + log[H₃O⁺]ₒ
= -log(0.12)
= 0.92
