Can fan films turn a profit?
Imagine this scenario: You and a bunch of your friends are talented cult followers of, say, a children s TV series that went off the air nearly a decade ago. You and your friends decide to make a 45-minuite-long PG fan film about it because you can. The Kickstarter page is a big success, and the franchise s original owner has given you the OK (if there s a royalty, you ve paid it). From here, is it possible to have people pay to watch it on Netflix, or should you just post it on YouTube and hope/ask for further donations alongside likes and subscriptions?

O ly of you have permission from those who hold the copyrights.
Possible? Sure. Likely no. If you have handled all the legal issues you can put it where you want assuming they will take it.
1. The franchise owner is not going to give you the OK.
2. Netflix probably isn't going to do business with you.
3. Youtube donations will probably not be enough to buy dinner for the crew.
You could be the lucky one who breaks all the rules, but the odds are against you.
Be careful about trademarks. Most fan fiction is ignored by trademark holders, until it becomes big. Then there is a lawsuit.
