Anything I should know before I start breezing race horses?

My farrier has been really pushing me to get out of the hunter jumper ring and start breezing race horses. The more he talks about it the more I m considering doing it, and he s offered to get me into contact with a race barn (is that even what they re called?) he shoes for in my area. Is there anything I should know before I tell Mike I m interested?

I m 5 2" 110 lbs. 17 years old and have been riding for five years now, showing A levels for multiple teams. I co-teach riding lessons and help train/rehab problem horses.

I'm helping break a two year old in the spring (the owner is like, 250ish and doesn't want to really ride her until she's developed enough to carry his weight) so I'll definitely make my decision then. Just curious ahead of time.

Make sure you have good health insurance. Remember that racehorses are 18 mos. old and up. The older ones should be fairly safe, but the younger ones are just that and the saddle and stirrups they use are not as secure as the ones you are used to.

You should know what you're doing -- and, fortunately, it cannot be found on a message board. Get working with an area barn to learn the basics....before you even mention you want a chance to ride. You cannot compare what you currently do with what you want to do....it is a large leap.

Is trackwork something you wanted to do before your farrier started pressuring you into it?
Please remember there is increased risk involved with riding trackwork compared to hunter jumpers. The level of training is greatly different as well
