A brick pier is 5 m square and 6 m high and weighs 20 kN/m^3 standing on a 6 m thick layer of soil. It is supporting an axial load of 500 kN. Calculate the stress at the top of the pier and the stress at the surface of the underneath soil. Also find the settlement of the soil if the Young’s Modulus of the soil is 150 kN/m^2.

Stress at top of pier = 500/5^2 kPa = 20 kPa

Total weight of pier = 20 x (5 x 5 x 6) kN = 3 000 kN
Hence, total load on surface of soil = (500 + 3000) kN = 3500 kN
Stress at surface of soil = 3500/5^ kN/m^2 = 140 kPa

Strain on the soil = 140/150 = 0.9333
Hence, settlement of soil = 0.9333 x 6 m = 5.6 m
