Is it illegal to put a tape recorder in someone s room without their consent?

My grandma told me this morning that she had a conversation with my dad and he said he found a tape recorder in my room and he s positive it s from his girlfriend. He s been dating her for a long time and we don t really like each other but we never talk. She always tells my dad things I talk about on the phone to my friends and stuff but it s like I don t get how she can even hear me. It makes sense now. She records everything I do and I didn t even know until today. She acts like she s okay with me. Is it illegal?

Technically yes but I doubt any domestic law firm would take up your case if you were to sue.

Yes, in most states it is illegal to record someone without their knowledge.
This is a state by state bases however.
AND it get tricky when you record outside where here is no expectation of privacy.

depends on where you live....
MOST places require consent of only one party to record (leaving a running tape recorder in a room that neither party know about is VERY illegal) meaning they have to be part of the conversation to record it....
