Why are Snails and Squids in the same phylum if so many differences exist between them?

Snails are gastropods and Squids are cephalopods. What characteristics/similarities classify both these classes under Molluska? In other words, why were both classified under Molluska?

A common ancestor that was a mollusc, with its innards in a mantle cavity, and trochophore larvae.

At the phylum level you would expect more differences between all the species in the phylum than similarities. In animals phyla are broadly determined by body plans. We are in the same phylum as the Atlantic Cod but there are not many similarieites between us.

From Wikipedia:

The three most universal features defining modern molluscs are a mantle with a significant cavity used for breathing and excretion, the presence of a radula (except for bivalves), and the structure of the nervous system.
