The Olympic games back to 776 BC in Greece.They held in summer once every four years in a place called Olympia. Only important men from cities under Greek rule could enter the games. They had sporting events liike running, boxing and horse back riding. On the first day of the games, no sports would be played and gift would be offerd to the gods.
The Olympic Games were most popular in the fifth and fourth century BC, but around 393 AD, when th Romans conquered Greece, the ruler of Rome ended the games. It was much later until in the 1800s when a French nobleman, Pierre de Coubertin, started the idea to hold the Olympic Games with different countries. In the way, people from different countries can get together and made the world more peaceful. With the idea of the world Olympic Games, the first modern Olympics were held in Athen, Greece, in 1896.
