Why won't my home button on andriod phone activate now on tap (google)?

I have an andriod phone called the ulefone power running andriod 6.0. Holding the home button bring up view of all recent apps. This seems to override the now on tap so I can't use it anywhere on any app on my phone. I've done research on how to remap the phone's hard keys to set long press as "search", but you have to root aparently. I don't want to go that far.

I found this link:

http://www.juliencavandoli.com/how-to-disable-recent-apps-dialog-on-long-press-home-button/

that is sort of the same thing I'm looking to do, except I have no idea how. That stuff is a gibberish to me. Can anyone help me figure out how to do what they're doing on my phone?

"Android", not "Andriod".

Nova launcher didn't change anything (looked at all the settings in there before after newest update)... no matter which launcher I use, it's still the recent apps menu

Try Nova Launcher. It should allow you to do what you are looking to do, with no rooting required.
