We know that that means for every 3 votes yes there are 5 votes no.
This would mean that out of 8 votes total, 3 of the votes would be yes and 5 of the votes would be no.

That means 3 out of 8 total votes would be yes. If we know the total votes are now 488, we can find the ratio by finding out what number or scale factor of the total votes lead to the new total.

3 yes votes = ? yes votes
8 total votes = 488 total votes

Since ratios should be multiplied by the same scale factor in order for the ratio to stay the same we have to figure out by what scale factor we could multiply 8 by to get 488 votes. When we find that out, we then can multiply the 3 by that number to preserve the ratio and find the amount of yes’s.

3 yes votes x 61 = ? yes votes
8 total votes x 61 = 488 total votes

We know that (488/8 = 61) or 488 is 61 times as much as 8. Because this is a ratio, the yes answers should be scaled or multiplied by the same amount. That means to find the yes votes we need to multiply the 3 votes by 61 to find out how many yes votes there were or 183.

We can check our answer by making sure the ratio is the same between both numbers. We can do this by dividing 3 by 8= .375 and then 183 by 488 which also equals .375.

# yes votes = 3x
# no votes = 5x

3x + 5x = 488
8x = 488
x = 61

# yes votes = 3 * 61 = 183

3yes votes+ 5novotes= 8votesinclusive of yes votes and no votes, making the ratio of 3 yes/5 no votes
so,3 x 488/8=183 yes votes

3x+5x = 8x
8x = 488
x = 61
3x = 183 votes

3/(3+5) = x/488
