Are people with down-syndrome biologically human?

So my teacher said during class that "All humans have 46 chromosomes, if you don't have 46 chromosomes you are a different species" Then i asked her about donkeys and horses. Because their genetically similar, then she said. "Yes, but since they both have a different but similar amount of chromosomes they offspring (mule) will not be able to reproduce" then shut me up. I don't understand. People with down syndrome have a duplicate of the 21st chromosome meaning they have 47 chromosomes together. Yes, a lot of genetic mutations do this. But doesn't that make them not human? People with down syndrome can also make offspring. Doesn't a person with a different amount of chromosomes make the off spring infertile? HELP PLEASEEEEEE. And I'm not meaning it in a mean way. I'm speaking biologically.

Yes.

> So my teacher said during class that "All humans have 46 chromosomes, if you don't have 46 chromosomes you are a different species"
No.
Down syndrome children and Turner syndrome girls are human. So are Klinefelter syndrome boys.
So are 47,XXX women and 47,XYY men.
These are people with a "syndrome." They're not from a separate isolated population somewhere. e.g. Down syndrome children have normal parents.

> Then i asked her about donkeys and horses.
Different species. There are existing feral populations of each. The hybrids have greatly reduced fertility.

> shes only a student teacher
She might not have been a biology major, then, or perhaps if she was, she missed the "populations biology" class that's an elective for juniors and seniors.

Chromosome number is merely one of many things that define a species as a whole, and not nearly as important as the general public seems to think it is. Individual variation is irrelevant.

I have Turner syndrome, which means I'm missing a chromosome instead of having an extra one as in Down syndrome. I *strongly* object to the ridiculous and ignorant assertion that because I have 45 chromosomes instead of 46 I am an entirely different species. It would take a pretty invasive examination for most people to be able to tell a woman with TS from one with the "normal" number of chromosomes, so how exactly are we "not human"?

Maybe your teacher just stuffed up when she said that, i'd ask her
