73.0 mL of a 1.40 M solution is diluted to a total volume of 258 mL. A 129-mL portion of that solution is diluted by adding 137mL of water. What is the final concentration? Assume the volumes are additive.

When 73.0 mL of a 1.40 M solution is diluted to a total volume of 258 mL.
C₁V₁ = C₂V₂
Concentration of the 258 mL solution, C₂ = C₁V₁/V₂ = 1.40 × 73.0 / 258 M = 0.396 M

The concentration of the 129-mL portion, C₃ = C₂ = 0.396 M

When the 129-mL portion of that solution is diluted by adding 137mL of water :
C₃V₃ = C₄V₄
Concentration of the final solution, C₄ = C₃V₃/V₄ = 0.396 × 129 / (129 + 137) M = 0.192 M
