The atom releases one electron to form the monatomic ion carrying 1+.
Number of electrons in the ion = 18
Hence, number of electrons in the atom = 18 + 1 = 19
Number of protons in the atom = Number of electrons in the atom = 19
Number of protons in the ion = Number of protons in the atom = 19

Since number of protons in the ion = 19
then the atomic number of the ion = 19

Potassium is the element with atomic number 19.
Hence, the element is potassium.
Its symbol is K.

Number of protons in the ion = 19
Number of neutrons in the ion = 20
Mass number of the ion = 19 + 20 = 39
