The theoretical singularity at the center of a black hole is a place of several infinities--infinite density, infinite space-time curvature, and infinite gravitational potential (not gravitational energy). But the singularity exists only in general relativity and doesn't take quantum physics into account, so it doesn't really exist.

Think of a singularity as merely an location where the laws of physics break down.

Black holes are a mess for BOTH general relativity AND quantum mechanics. While general relativity produces infinite gravity and such in its equations of black holes, quantum mechanics produces infinite probabilities and negative probabilities (and of course you can only have 0-100%, anything else is meaningless). Note these probabilities do come as a result of combining relativity and quantum mechanics.

String theory does away with the point-particle nature of the universe, and in term actually helps to solve it (along with other details that are explained in the theory).

In my opinion, the BEST current answer we have is that incomplete mathematical framework that makes up string theory (well I guess the theory itself).

Sorry for the vague answer in terms of what is inside the black hole... If you want more detail, the same information can be found online.

Gravitation is really a force; it's not actually energy. It's the effect mass has on space - the more mass there is, the greater the curvature of space/time; the more *concentrated* the mass is, the greater the curvature of space/time...

So, black holes don't have infinite mass, but it *is* very concentrated at the singularity. So much so, that the 'Event Horizon' that forms around a singularity can be viewed as a sort of 'border' - between our universe, and the realm of the black hole....
