How do I fix it with him?

I like this boy and it was going well and he looked at me heaps then all of a sudden he started ignoring me (but still looking at me) and his friends told me he's scared of me, I piss him off I think it and he thinks I'm annoying. This confused me. Then one day, his friend told me he's over 'all of this' meaning people annoying him about me liking him. I wasn't aware any of that was happening. His friend suggested I message him, call him or talk to him alone so I messaged him. I asked if he had anything against me, and he said 'No, it's cool all good' which didn't seem too convincing.

Now, it's still a bit weird between us. Whenever I'm around, he goes quiet like he's annoyed/shy. He doesn't talk to me, but he looks at me a lot whenever he can see me. There was a rumour going around that he liked this girl who he talks to a lot and sits next to, but his mates say he doesn't. It doesn't add up though, why is he looking at me so often if he feels nothing? How do I fix it? Cause even if we don't date, I'd love to be friends again. I miss him. (He doesn't want to date right now)
