Copper (2) sulfate crystals, CuSO4 . 5H2O, are made by adding an excess of copper (2) oxide to hot sulfuric acid, filtering the mixture and then crystallizing the solution. What is the maximum mass of crystals that could be obtained by adding an excess of copper (2) oxide to 25 cm3 of 1.0 mol/dm3 sulfuric acid?

CuO + H₂SO₄ → CuSO₄ + H₂O
Hence, mole ratio H₂SO₄ : CuSO₄•5H₂O = 1 : 1

Number of moles of H₂SO₄ reacts = (1.0 mol/dm³) × (25/1000 dm³) = 0.025 mol
Maximum number of moles of CuSO₄•5H₂O formed = 0.025 mol

Molar mass of CuSO₄•5H₂O = (63.5 + 32.1 + 16.0×9 + 1.0×10) g/mol = 249.6 g/mol
Maximum mass of CuSO₄•5H₂O formed = (249.6 g/mol) × (0.025 mol) = 6.24 g
