So I'll answer your question, but I'm going to lead with saying that I'm a mormon, so if that's a turn off for you, feel free to stop reading now. By default, my answer will have to be based on things the church teaches and the things that I've come to believe about our purpose of being here, though I will try to not to be "preachy" as I explain myself.
I'm like you in that I love science. I'm currently studying neuroscience in college and am planning to medical school once I graduate. Many people think that religion and science are two completely opposite realms of thinking, but taking things I've learned in church about God and things I've learned in school about science, I believe the two go hand in hand. In my mind, science isn't something that disproves the existence of God, but rather is our slow understanding of how God works. I tend to think that God "designed" the universe rather than "created" it, because "creation" to me seems to imply some kind of sudden appearance out of nothing. I think that everything in the universe, all the planets, all the animals, you and me, we were all designed by God with incredible detail.
Now how does that relate to why we are here? Well just like with you or me, when we put effort into making something, we tend to care about it, and usually the more effort we put in, the more we care about it. I believe that same logic would apply to God, and anyone who has studied biology can tell you humans are incredibly complex, so to "create" something like a human being would take an immense amount of effort and work. (For the record, I don't believe God is "magic", so yes, creating things would have to take work and effort. I think He is more similar to you and I than we probably realize, though I also think His level of understanding of how the universe works is so far beyond yours or mine that he may as well be considered "magic" compared to us) Anyways, putting that much effort into something would cause you to care a great deal about it, and I think He really does care about and love each of us. In the long run, I think His goal for each of us is to become like Him eventually, but I think we are here to grow, to learn how to love and how to deal with hardships and any number of other things that we experience here in life because in some way it prepares us to become more like Him.
This is getting long, so if you or anyone else has actually read to this point, kudos to you :) haha but I guess I'll wrap up by saying I certainly do not have all the answers. I think not knowing for certain is part of that growing and learning process. Again, most of this is just my take on all of it (hopefully it all made sense... haha), just a combination of things I've learned going to church and going to school. If this really is a major concern for you, I'd highly recommend checking out the things the mormon church teaches about all of it as they have a pretty unique take on all of it compared to many other churches (and definitely do so by talking to the missionaries or looking at lds.org, there's alot of people who hate mormons for some reason, so there's alot of garbage that you'll find if you try to use general search engines on the internet.) Anyways, hope this was helpful, sorry it was long... haha :)
