it was very poor Bacteria the major cause of most diseases was unknown till the 19th century so before that epidemics just swept through the Bubonic Plague spread by fleas that carried the deadly bacteria was responsible for millions of deaths babies and children died of the common cold and diseases we now control with vaccines so basically it was not till the discovery of bacteria mid 19th century public health was dreadful
