Would you call a married couple with no kids a 'family'? Would you call a couple with a child but not married yet a 'family'? Would you call a couple with adopted children a 'family'?

Yes all of what you described is a family. Even a greater friendship could be considered a family. It's all about who is there for you and who will always be there for you in the end.
