Should the US protect hate speech?

The US has a long tradition of freedom of speech--it's protected by the first of our bill of rights. The problem with banning hate speech is who gets to decide what's hate speech and what isn't. It's not that hate speech has any great value, but that government shouldn't be in the business of deciding what speech is valuable and what isn't. The way to defeat hate speech is not by banning it, but by out-debating it--show where it's wrong and hateful by making a better argument.

All speech should be protected. If we allow the government to determine what speech is considered "not protected" than it could very soon be YOUR speech that is not protected.

If other republics have not learned their lesson from history, than that is their problem.

I don't like racism or racist talk, but YES it shoudl be protected.

If calling someone the n word, puts you in jail, how many black people will be placed in jail for this very reason? Will calling someone a cracker get the same treatment? Does calling for violence against say the police, considered a "hate crime"? What about calling for the death of white people?

You see, I don't think you are really even against hate speech. I think if you did equitably apply your standards than clearly the people who are most angry with society are going to be the people most negatively affected by such laws. My guess as to the people who are MOST angry with society, are going to be the black people and Hispanic people. You want them most affected by your laws?

Further, recall that you are giving the right to determine what constitutes "hate speech" for arrest to the police. DO you want to give the police the right to arrest someone based upon what they say??? You think they might not misapply that?

Recall that you are not talking about whether speech is "protected". Protected from whom??? THE GOVERNMENT!!! You are talking about whether the government should have the power to arrest people because of what the person says. Not showing harm or loss of property or loss of anything, what they say.

Look, this is rather simple.

You fight darkness with light.
You fight lies with truth.
You fight ignorance with knowledge.
You fight hate with love.

You cannot regulate what is in a person's heart. The only effect of trying to do so is to increase the prison population and drive these mislead and mistaken people further from the truth. You will alienate them more so by placing them into a mostly inescapable system. Do you know how hard it is to get a job after serving time?? To properly rejoin society?

Problem is everyone thinks they get decide what hate speech is. Yes it should be protected. Inciting violence is already against the law.

We already do protect it whether we acknowledge it or not. Radical BLM and Feminists are perfect examples of this.

Going around screaming "Kill the *******!" shouldn't be considered free speech. Of course, if there were laws protecting people against hate speech, there would also need to be laws protecting people who make jokes or stay stuff that is offensive don't get in trouble for it. There should really be a punishment for hate speech, as much as a way of censoring people who publish works featuring it outside the context of art.
