Why am I terrified of alarms?
Ever since I can remember, I have been terrified of alarms and I have no idea why. It's not a fear of what they signal, it's a fear of them. When I used to hear any kind of alarm, including the high-pitched low battery sound of our old laptop, I would break down and cry for close to an hour, sometimes more. It's not as bad now, but I still have small breakdowns every time I hear an alarm. I tried buying a nest, the kind that talk instead of beeping, but that's even worse. Every time I hear it speak, I go into the same automatic panic. Why do I have this fear? My parents tell me I have been afraid of fire alarms since I was a baby, but the dog was always there to comfort me in the past, and now he's gone I don't know what I can do. Please help.
