Both S and O belong to Group VIA in the Periodic Table. There are 3 electronic shells in an S atom, while there are only 2 electronic shells in an O atom. Hence, S atom is bigger than O atom because S atom has one more electronic shell than O atom.

The size of the atom is determined by its electron structure. Oxygen has 8 electrons, sulfur has 16. The additional 8 electrons fill the 2p orbital and the 3s and 3 p orbitals in addition, so the sulfur atom is larger.
