A 57.17-g sample of Ba(OH)2 is dissolved in enough water to make 1.800 liters of solution. How many mL of this solution must be diluted with water in order to make 2.000 L of 0.100 M Ba(OH)2? The molar mass of Ba(OH)2 is 171.3 g/mol

Number of moles of Ba(OH)₂ = (57.17 g) / (171.3 g/mol) = 57.17/171.3 mol
Molarity of the original Ba(OH)₂ solution = (57.17/171.3 mol) / (1.800 L) = 0.1854 M

Consider the dilution of the solution :
M₁ V₁ = M₂ V₂
(0.1854 M) × V₁ = (0.100 M) × (2000 mL)

Volume of the original solution needed
= (0.100 M) × (2000 mL) / (0.1854 M)
= 1079 mL (to 4 sig. fig.)
