The reaction for producing glucose in plants, called photosynthesis, is
6CO2 + 6H2O --> C6H12O6 +6O2

If a plant produces 2.96 mol of C6H12O6, how many moles of CO2 are needed?

6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ +6O₆
Mole ratio CO₂ : C₆H₁₂O₆ = 6 : 1

No. of moles of C₆H₁₂O₆ produced = 2.96 mol
No. of moles of CO₂ needed = (2.96 mol) × 6 = 17.76 mol

The coefficients in a balanced equation determine the ratio of the moles of reactants to moles of products. In this reaction, six moles of CO2 reacts with six moles of H2O to produce one mole of C6H12O6 and six moles of O2. Let’s use the following proportion to determine the number of moles of CO2

x/6 = 2.96/1
x = 2.96 ÷ 6
This is approximately 0.493 mole of CO2.
