Is community college a good option for me?

I'm currently a senior in high school. I did well in elementary and middle school, but by the time high school hit I was severely depressed and my grades dropped, and I got Cs and Ds in freshman and sophomore year. When junior year came, I managed to pull my grades back into honour roll (though mostly Bs). Now I'm considering community college out of state to live with relatives and then transfer to UVA Nursing. I plan to become a nurse practitioner. Is this a smart option of me? If anyone has experience with going to community college and then transferring to a four-year university and getting a good career, please share them. I've always been conditioned to think that community college was a last resort for people who screwed up in high school.

It sounds like you are being a little hard on yourself. If you are getting B's and honor roll in Junior year, it sound like you are getting your head screwed on straight now. Are you doing as good or better now? You don't need to wait for a report card to come out to tell if your attitude and grades are better now.

Look at admission requirements for UVA. Do a little math to see if it's reasonably possible for you to make their requirements if you do a good job in your Senior year. Have you talked about this with your parents? Out of state tuition will be a killer.

Where ever you go, community college can help get your grades up. You can even get an Associates degree in nursing at many. Talk to the community college guidance councilor to see about how it would transfer to UVA. If you do it right, it should take care of at least all of the general studies requirements for a 4 year school.

Community College is an excellent option for pretty much everyone focusing on academics. They don't have sports and fraternities and things like that. But the credits are exactly the same, and you save 50 thousand dollars by the time you transfer. Then you do your last two years at a university and you get the exact same degree as the fools that are 100k in debt.

Absolutely! It is a good choice. The future profession you are aspiring does not require you to start at a university. Community colleges are cheaper and you'll learn more.

Great idea! I did not do the best in High School and knew I had a slim chance of getting into my current university, their acceptance rate is just below 50%, Did my first two years at Community College, did well, and the accepted me immediately. Make sure that the classes you take transfer! Complete all general educations requirements at the community college so you can take the relevant classes to your career the last 2 years.

The good thing is you will leave with an Associates degree. Take CPR/First Aid classes, and try to get medical assistant or CNA certification while you are in Community College. When you transfer to UVA then you can work, while getting your education in a relevant field. By the time you graduate you will have 2 years experience (3+ if you get certification before stated at the community college and work, while in school). Also look into internships while in Community College for behavior units. You usually work with individuals with disabilities and that will look good on your resume'.

Community college is a great option for many people for many reasons: financial, class size, need to live at home, and more. Earning your gen ed requirements and major pre-recs before transferring to university works well--as long as you check with the university you are planning to transfer to and are sure you are taking classes that will transfer. If you are planning on being a nurse, you can do the nursing pre-recs and earn your nursing degree at CC. Later you can go to university to complete a BSN (often need to be an RN first). From there you will earn an MSN.
Besides making sure you are earning the credits you need for university, there are two other things I think you should think about. First, if you move to another state you will pay out-of-state tuition, which will be expensive. Second, be sure to choose a school and a community that can provide you with counseling services you are comfortable with, should you need them. Answering questions here I hear from many students who are dealing with depression and it's adversely impacting their academic life. Best wishes, whatever you decide.

Community college sounds like just what the doctor ordered.

Once you have an Associates degree from a community college, you can transfer into a Bachelors program and nobody will care about high school grades.
