Im not in recovery, but am studying to be an addictions counselor currently. I feel like an outsider who cant fit in. I have always been interested in this population and have always wanted to work with it, but since i have not been a part of this population, i am starting to feel like i have no place here. It is very discouraging.. should addiction counselors be in recovery to be good?

I think an addict has an insight that many who haven't had the issue, in my experience, lack. I think it is hard to be able to understand fully if one doesn't have the mindset. Think about it, an addicts own mind turns against them. Ones own mind playing head games and manipulating oneself. How can one who has never experienced it/gone through it, believe it, never mind understand it. I have been in recovery for more then two decades and I have yet to meet an effective counselor that hasn't gone through it at some level.
