What was society like during the late Roman Empire?

Really bad.
They only had 3G internet and all the streaming limits were soooo bad.
During the late empire (say 330AD-410AD) things had deteriorated very badly in society. The past commoner farmers had all become peasant farmers and serfs. The population of slaves remained ridiculously high. Hardly any of the middle class (what there was ever of it) was left. The elite rich and officials (maybe 5% of the population) had all the wealth, all the money, all the land.
They shared absolute rule with the army. All resources of the empire went only to the 5% and the army, so that the Roman Empire had become a hollow 'house of cards' ready to be kicked in.
Inside the hollow empire, the part that was still functioning shrunk down to the popular major cities of Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Egypt, Greece, because the rich and elite resided there. They and the army started to wall off these cities.
