How can i study abroad?

Hello, I have a question. I am a student in UK and i have to apply to universities in about a year. I'd like to think ahead and i'm thinking about studying abroad.

I do a science extended diploma btec and many universities have told me that i shouldnt worry about that limiting my possibilities, and that I can be accepted as long as I get good grades and complete my ACT or SAT tests.

Im looking to study in either USA or Canada. , however the costs are insane to me. I personally cant afford them. Is there any way i can get a scholarship or financial aid? Only one of my parents go to work and our income is below £30,000 .

When it comes to scholarships, is it ALL about the grades? I didnt do as well at GCSES but I am so positive about my grades in college. Is there any way to get a scholarship based on my college results or something else?

any other advice or tips? Its a dream of mine which i dont want to give up on.

Unfortunately qualifications at the BTEC level are not acceptable abroad. This is simply because overseas universities do not trust qualifications which are not tested through an examination. Nearly all of the BTEC is assessed through coursework which is open to abuse (I'm not saying you abuse this - others have however). Only 3-year degrees have their counterparts or accepted value overseas.

Perhaps if you pay enough you may be able to do a bridging course to get into an overseas university (like the Access to Education courses here in the UK) but this will add to the cost and time. I can't see why you would get a scholarship when each country has millions of its own people it could fund from its own student pool, many of whom are very deserving (poor, handicapped etc).

Again if you have thought about studying abroad, have you considered which country, and the challenges of studying in that language and not English? Do you have sufficient command of that language to do well in the examinations alongside native speakers?

To anyone who has done A levels or got a degree, I'm afraid that GCSEs or even BTECs have limited value other than in that single profession and in the UK and its universities. Whilst it seems that GCSEs are important at age 16, they have next to no street value in employment compared to having a degree. I think your best bet is to do well in your BTECs, forget your GCSEs as having no value other than to get onto a BTEC course, and go on to do that subject at a good UK university. After that, obtain a job or further study if you can afford it with a student loan for your first degree to repay) in another country. Alternatively you could have a "gap year" after your BTEC before university and do this abroad, such as looking after children in a family or working in an hotel abroad, or preferably something which is relevant to your BTEC and degree which you can include in your UCAS application.

Remember that there are millions of people earning under £30k a year, including most of your teachers. A teacher's salary starts at around £21k, and goes up to about £36k and so don't expect preferential treatment as a low income family I'm afraid, except as regards obtaining a Student Loan for university in the UK where this is a consideration.

I'm sorry if this does come across as negative but remember that your teachers are there to encourage you to do well by any means of motivation possible. If you get into a financial mess overseas, or find you are in massive debt, or get homesick, none of these are their responsibility after the fact.

BTECs aren't accepted anywhere outside the UK, so this route won't allow you to study abroad.

And if you can't afford it; you can't study abroad. There are very few scholarships in any other countries for international students; all would be university-specific
