Yes, smothering them in oil usually kills them.
I'm assuming you mean "fresh air", and no. They have no real need for oxygen, and even after hatching that need is so slight as to make deprivation almost impossible in a natural setting.
An absolute vacuum would do them in though since it would desiccate them completely.
