I have a really bad sore throat and when I tried to go to sleep all i felt was like mucus coming up every time. I would get up constantly to drink water. I took a nap for about 15 min and I woke up coughing up a bunch of liquid mucus!! I swallowed it because I was scared and I didn't know what to do I was shocked at how much phlegm was there. So I kept coughing it and i kept swallowing it. I couldn't vomit. What should I do now? I don't want that to happen again. U think the mucus is in my stomach now?

Your stomach normally has a lining of mucus to keep the acids in your stomach from eating through it - more mucus isn't a bad thing usually. The problem is that swallowed mucus can be regurgitated because you are fooling your body into increasing acid production to begin digestion of food that isn't really there. The extra acid can cause a "sour stomach" and if you vomit this will burn your throat.

The best thing to do is to take a decongestant to help loosen excess phlegm and to continue drinking water, which keeps phlegm hydrated and loose, allowing it to be expelled from the body either by sneezing, blowing your nose, or by coughing it up. You can never get rid of all phlegm, as your body continually makes more to help: line the stomach, trap foreign invaders to the respiratory system, line the sinuses, etc.

The color of your phlegm can be a great indicator of how sick you are, with yellow or green mucus being a good sign of an infection that you should see your Doctor about.

Take some MUCINEX and get it out.
