How do you take a DSLR photo?

I have the Canon Powershot sx530 hs. I want to take pictures of people with the background blurry. Is that possible to do? If it is how do I do it? Thanks!

Point and shoot?

To make the background blurry, you need to position the subject as far as possible from the background, position the camera as near as possible to the subject, set the lens focal length to maximum if it's a zoom lens, then set the lens aperture to the lowest available f/number. With the Powershot, you can do the first three only but I guess that shouldn't stop you from trying.

The Canon you listed is not a DSLR.

You are asking how to set it for a narrow depth of field. To do that use a big aperture (small f-stop). If you can't control the aperture, then set it for the fastest shutter speed that still allows the camera to get a good picture;
use a high zoom.

Not a DSLR but you can do that. Turn the mode to AV, set the f-stop to the lowest (3.4 on your cam, I guess), Keep auto-focus turned on, come slightly closer to the subject (or zoom) and try to focus on the subject, the background will go blurred. It's called bokeh and it's possible in most cameras and smartphones these days.

Ah, now I know what you mean - no specific connection with any type of camera., but indeed a DSLR with slightly long lens does make the blurry background idea easy.

You need to zoom in on the main subject at least 4x zoom, better 6x or more. You need to use the lens at full aperture (lowest number available), thus probably around f4 or f5.6, not f8 or f11. You need to have the background a long way behind the main subject.

Good luck!
