Yes. Pro umpires often begin in youth and high school ball. The can go
There from college ball, but most umpires don't start there.

You go to the pro umpire school. (I know there's the Wendelstedt school, and I think MLB has a school.) it lasts five weeks and costs several thousand dollars.

The top grads are referred to Minor League Baseball, and if selected, they start working at low level ball (such as the rookie leagues) and work their way up from there. Getting all the way to MLB involves doing well at each level and getting good evaluations.

Then, you may be selected to fill-in when MLB umpires are off. And eventually, you may be selected for MLB.

Note, minor league umpires are generally poorly paid. So, you need to be dedicated to the craft.

Of course. They don't just start out in the MLB.

actually, anyone can... the mlb has a specific "college" (more like a camp) for those who want to be umpires for the big leagues... they are certified - or not - after the course...

if certified, then the association shall often place them where needed... you can request your "home team", but that doesn't *always* work out.........be prepared to move if you really want to do it...

Yes they can and MLB umpires job open up about as often as positions on the U.S. Supreme Court.

At most there at 15 games each day times 4 people per crew for regular season. That's 60 umpires. Let's allow for time off so we will add 3 extra crews for 12 more umpires. That adds up to 72 umpires.

It does not matter what line of work it is. If 72 jobs exist nationally then the odds of any one person getting one of those jobs is very low.

My advice? Pursue you goals and have a good Plan B.

Of course they can. All MLB umpires started somewhere.

Yes, but it's almost as hard to become an MLB umpire as it is to become an MLB player
