Why dont' poor people have interest in healthy organic foods?

2016-08-24 9:42 pm
So I notice that for poor people, food is just food. They will eat anything. A frozen pizza or frozen tv dinner is good enough for them. IF you start explaining how bad that stuff is for you they just don't get what you are talking about. Sort of like its a foreign language or something.

Not to be rude but you sound completely ignorant. People with Financial problems can't just walk into healthy organic stores and spend lots of money on healthy organic things. They have a hard time with money already so quite naturally they are going to buy cheap foods. I mean it's not rocket science. If they didn't already have lots of other financial problems to worry about, then they'd probably have more time to worry about eating organic.
2016-08-25 1:32 pm
Because they are expensive, that's why.

Not everyone who is "poor" has poor eating habits and not everyone who is upper, middle class or affluent eats healthy.

There's also been studies in recent years that indicate that organic foods are really no more healthy than foods that aren't. The only difference between an organic banana and a non organic one is.. the organic ones cost more.

Some inner city people also actually don't have access to them. Many are far from a farmers market or a big grocery store that has them available. Some who don't drive or have access to transportation will shop at smaller markets and they have to get what is actually available to them.

You eat what you can afford and what you have access to get.
2016-08-25 3:37 am
I'm poor but not everyone eats like that. I'm fit end even though I don't eat organic fruits/foods I still eat healthy foods and regular fruits. So not everyone that's poor has bad eating habits.
2016-08-24 9:44 pm
Have you seen the prices of healthy organic foods? I'm sure they are interested, but when a frozen pizza provides more filling food for the price then what do you think they are going to choose?

I advise you to research the food stamp challenge and tell me how you would do living on that budget :D
2016-08-26 5:33 pm
It's not that people do not have an interest in eating healthy organic foods.. Oh no.. It's that fact that organic foods cost considerably more that regular foods not grown organically. Think about this: Do you see a wholefoods, Dorothy Lane Market, Kroger Marketplace or whatever mid to high end chain grocery you have where you live in areas where lower income people live? No you dont. They put these stores where the money is period leaving everyone else to make due and if you don't have a car or ride the bus or a buddy with a car it makes it difficult for people to have access to better food. To ask this question was closeminded to begin with
2016-08-24 9:44 pm
1. They don't have the money to spend almost double on common food items like eggs and bread.

2. They don't have the means to drive across town just to spend extra money.
2016-08-25 4:48 pm
Organic food is expensive and there are plenty of healthy foods that aren't organic. Organic food is a waste of money.
2016-08-25 3:44 am
Organic food is costly
2016-08-25 1:37 pm
The healthier food doesn't have to be organically produced. The price of organic food can be twice or three times as much as regular food.

If a person eats mostly junkfood it's not always because it's cheap but because it's fast and easy to prepare and they have gotten used to it. Some people simply don't care or they don't know much about nutriton but that has nothing to do with a person's wealth. I didn't know much about nutrition until I started going to gym and wanted to see how bodybuilders or athletes create their meals.
2016-08-29 7:41 pm
Organic food is expensive, it's as simple as that. Just because someone is poor does NOT mean that they are not wanting to eat healthy. It's not just poor people, it's people of all classes.
2016-08-25 2:59 pm
I'm not very rich but I have been always interested in healthy eating. It's completely fine for the poor people to be interested in their health too.
2016-08-29 4:24 am
I have a PhD, am newly disabled, gov't pays very little, I have nearly nothing to grocery shop with so youo pick filling food, and I pick as healthy as I can for limited dollars. Also as I am learning the ropes of the newly poor, many people (you bitchly assume it is a choice) don't have accommodations to live in with fridges to keep food cold, fresh, or anything but a microwave to cook with. Stop judging.
2016-08-28 6:22 pm
Because where I come from, a large pizza cost $4 and an avocado cost $6, enough said. If you can't grasp that then I can't help you.
2016-08-27 2:57 am
Maybe they don't have the enough money to buy these kind of foods.
2016-08-26 5:44 am
Because they don't have the resources to buy anything but prepackaged junk. Even conventional vegetables and fruits cost money. So, if it is beyond them they are not interested. A bunch of fresh Kale costs only 99 cents--but few would dine on that alone. They go for comfort food.
2016-08-25 5:21 pm
YOU bit presumptive, not only poor who eat crap but as others say expensive plus how many people learn how to cook rich or poor.Maybe schools should teach how to cook healthy and frugal
2016-08-25 4:40 am
maybe they are just focusing on trying not to die of starvation
2016-08-25 3:46 am
It is not the matter of poor or rich I think.
2016-08-25 12:04 am
Im poor and im actually a raw vegetarian so i dont think youre right in generalizing everyone... Theres plenty of highly rich people who eat crap so....
2016-08-24 11:44 pm
Sh*t be 'spensive, yo.
2016-08-27 6:14 pm
Organic foods are generally more expensive than regular or cheap foods. Plus frozen foods require less gas and electricity for them to be defrosted, making their bills much cheaper.

BTW It's not just poor people! It could be also lazy or ignorant people, poor people could be interested in organic foods as much as rich people.
2016-08-27 9:02 am
They do, they cannot afford them.
2016-08-27 1:49 am
THAT IS NOT TRUE. I AM POOR AND I EAT HEALTHY MOST OF THE TIME. SOMETIMES I DO HAVE JUNK FOOD BUT ITS NOT ALL THE TIME.
2016-08-26 10:15 pm
Because they are too poor to afford them. They might even forget how it tastes.
2016-08-26 9:53 am
I don't know where you live, but where I live, organic food is freaking expensive, man.
2016-08-26 2:55 am
They're expensive.
2016-08-25 9:15 pm
WHY do you single out poor people? I am not poor nor wealthy, but I know both, and even the wealthy do not go for organic foods.
2016-08-25 4:06 pm
$$ and perhaps they, on some level, don't see the value of organic.
2016-08-25 4:51 am
Usually people think fruits are high in price but it's just as much as there burger at a fast food place. But also some people prefer eating worse food because they like it.
2016-08-24 9:43 pm
they just can't afford to buy them
2016-08-27 1:28 am
Just because something is organic doesn't mean it's healthy. But anyways, it's because organic foods are considerably more expensive than cheap foods. Burgers at McDonalds are $1 but salads cost more than that, as an example.
2016-08-25 9:16 pm
A lot of poor people do not have the education or self-discipline to find healthy food. It is easier to go to McDonalds or buy a pizza than to plan a healthy meal. You can live very cheaply on beans and rice plus a few vegetables and fruit, but most people go for the junk food.
I see homeless people with Starbucks coffee, because they have no self-control and do not think ahead.
2016-08-25 4:33 pm
Often the person is poor because they just don't care. There are plenty of chances to get money in this country.

Also, Organic foods often aren't any different than normal food, so they don't want to bother wasting money.

have seen cost of organic foods... your just buying something that is more expensive... taste the same... anything in vegetables with no chemicals or pesticide is considered organic... it cost more money for the same taste... what the difference... cost more for organic food unless the welfare rats that use my taxes dollars pay for there lazy but to eat... for poor people don't take government handouts why waste your money on more expensive food that cost more for same taste...
2016-11-08 2:15 pm

2016-08-29 8:45 pm
Wouldn't it be wise to teach nutrition beginning in kindergarten? And for you to assume that only "poor" people don't care what they eat is biased. Healthy organic foods cost a lot more and many people have only so much to spend on food for themselves or their families.
2016-08-29 2:13 pm
First of all drop your judgment .....when you visit the inner city there are convenient stores everywhere and mostly what they sell is the pizzas etc. Secondly-most of our schools no longer have a class called "Home Economics" which taught people how to cook, care for their home etc etc. Third: Criticizing does not solve the problem...why not become a change agent that helps communities ( http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/8388-using-community-gardens-to-grow-low-income-communities-out-of-food-deserts ) Become a part of the solution instead part of the problem [Criticism without solutions]
2016-08-29 1:06 am
wel theres always a section somwhere with 1 dollar veggies and fruits. so its healthy sometimes organic or at least conventional. same diff.
2016-08-29 12:44 am
If your poor are you going to spend all you money on trying to get EXPENSIVE organic foods, no your priority is getting a proper house and doesn't matter how fat you get in the process
2016-08-28 6:06 pm
The poor people thrives for food and it is their biggest necessity and only priority and they know they cant make limited choices for the sake of health benefits and they are accustomed to getting those via donation or from any restaurants left overs. They are basically not to be blamed and its the situation.
2016-08-28 5:24 pm

Because all they care about is having enough energy to be able to work through the day and support their families and themselves.
2016-08-28 12:30 am
Organic foods are neccesarily healthy, they just get the label organic, if their contaminants, pesticides dont reach a certain level. just like how transfat is not really 0%.
organic foods is at least 2-5 times mor expensive than the same food elsewhere, espcially if you buy it at a health food/organic store. Whole foods is notoriously expensive. Also the food portion is smaller as well
2016-08-27 9:38 pm
Poorer people eat unhealthily because it's cheaper than healthy foods and drinks.
2016-08-27 4:31 pm
Im not very rich but I love eating healthy! The reason though is that organic foods are VERY expensive, and there aren't many coupons for those. It sucks :(
2016-08-27 11:31 am
Money, get it to cost less and maybe they will, when I see organic I think first to much money then it has less crap in it
2016-08-27 4:23 am
Because we are poor lol i eat 2 balogna sandwhiches everday because its all i can afford. Poor people eat anything because we have to not because we prefer it. Meats, dairy, fish, and poultry are all expensive as hell. Whole wheat loafs of bread are around 5$. We simply cant afford that and with our busy work schedules we do not have the time to prepare home cooked meals or shop around for cheap prices and coupons to make healthy eating affordable.
2016-08-26 8:33 pm
ALL food is ORGANIC. The difference is in the lie on the label and the way it is grown and the laws of that particular state. Many foods thought to be healthy are NOT. I eat a very cheap dietr, I enjoy it, and at 63 I have lost over 100 pounds from wehen I was 61, my blood panels are the best the last two years than EVER in my life, and I eat lats of kale, collard greens, and other things like that from my BULLIT drinks, dont eat high salt foods like man made meats(things that do not grow on an animal like hot dogs, sausage, etc) and fight a lot(on my knees) ha knowing the battle is won with kneeology not theology. it affects ones health too
2016-08-26 8:40 am
Because they don't have money and they are going to buy cheap foods.
2016-08-26 6:39 am
People who don't have a lot of people buy what they can, "junk" food is cheaper
2016-08-26 3:59 am
Because it costs too much...just buy good quality foods from a high quality food store...organic is a marketing ploy that's all.
2016-08-25 10:58 pm
Organic foods are expensive, that's why
2016-08-29 7:57 am
The poor can only eat what they can afford. Unfortunately, the healthier a food is, the more expensive it usually is.
2016-08-28 1:17 pm
The less-educated don't focus as much on reading food labels as the well-educated, so the less-educated/poor may not know or care what's in what they eat. Plus marketing of junk food is often geared at the less-educated/poor.
2016-08-27 4:55 pm
because healthy foods are expensive.
2016-08-27 4:36 am
Here poor people do. It is all they can afford to buy. Canned & prepaired food cost much more.
2016-08-26 6:26 pm
I think that besides being poorly educated on good eating habits, the poor seem to only have access to the cheap, high fat, fast food.
2016-08-25 10:55 pm
Let's make this simple for you.
Less money=buy cheap food
Buy cheap food=eats cheap food
Eats cheap food=eats unhealthy food.
2016-08-25 6:11 pm
Probably because natural, healthy organic food costs more than convinience & quick make food. Maybe (depending on the circumstances) if the person is poor, they are from a deprived background, no jobs, low self worth etc etc they may not have a motivation or self esteem to try hard at being healthy
2016-08-26 3:27 pm
I don't know, but even if you are poor you can trade junk food for healthy food to spend your money on. But some people also just don't care and are happy with themselves so they are not guilty when they eat the junk food that they eat. We are poor I don't eat enough organic food but I do eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and they fill me up if I eat enough of them. I sometimes get in my moods and eat all junk food no big deal.
2016-08-24 9:47 pm
yes, i agree with you . to them food is not fantasy it's life saving situation so, they don't care what is look like .
plus they think the future as myth not reality .

most poor people are not well educated and that makes the situation much more worst .
personaly what i worry about is , that poor people will stay beein poor , and rich will always rich . there is no exit in this cylce . remember being poor is not genetic disorder it matter of chance.
