The only reason to have credit cards is to control your cash flow, and so deal with bills once or twice a month. That, and use the receipts to keep track of your spending.

the stupidest reason is to pay off a debt -- the interest rate on credit cards is far greater than that of taking out a small loan from a finance company or bank.

Credit cards are not meant to pay off debts. That's what jobs are for. You do the work and you get a paycheck and you use that money to pay off the debt. If you already have a job, get a second one until the debt is paid off and you have some savings.

If you use a credit card to pay a debt, you don't lose the debt. You just transfer a debt that doesn't grow into a debt that grows monthly with finance charges. That's going from bad to worse.

You'll probably going to ignore this advice, since most people only seem to learn the hard way. I've been there--I've avoided all phone calls and opening mail until finally I was threatened with lawsuits and wage garnishment for not paying my credit card on time. I finally learned my lesson and cut up all my credit cards but one for emergencies only. My motto now is: If I can't afford to pay cash for it, I sure as hell can't afford to pay for it plus monthly finance charges and possible late fees!

you do not get out of debt by borrowing more money, it is just trading one debt for another and makes no sense.
To pay off a different debt with a credit card , you would have to take out a cash advance, which begins accruing interest the day you withdraw, no grace period on this, and the interest rate would likely be high for a first time card holder even if you got a card.
get more hours at work or a second job to pay off debt

The bad is that it is to easy to buy things you don't need or are too expensive just because you can. It doesn't seem like real money. The good is that you don't need to carry large amounts of cash. But that is helpful if you pay it in full each month. Paying 20-30% in interest is a heavy price to pay on top of the cost of things you don't really need. Borrowing is not the way to get rich.
