Dawson City currently has around 2000 people, and while it is not crowded, there are few empty lots. In 1898, about 30-40,000 people showed up. Where they all lived is hard to imagine today. The crowding was insane.

It depended on where they were an the circumstances of the rush. Sometimes, as in Alaska or California, more people arrived than could be housed properly.
