Focus on "part" instead of "apart".

Even though they are located next to each other, they are not connected. Contrast an apartment complex against a building of the same size with the same number of occupants, but which you would call a "house." People in a house live communally - they share one kitchen, television, washer, etc. Apartments are discrete living spaces carved out of a larger building.

If they weren't together, they would be called houses.

Because togetherments sounded stupid.

You are confusing apartments with " compartments"

Origin -- mid 17th century (denoting a suite of rooms for the use of a particular person or group): from French appartement, from Italian appartamento, from appartare ‘to separate,’ from a parte ‘apart.’
