How to format Win 7 computer and install XP?

I want to nuke my second, useless Windows 7 PC and install XP on it (for playing older games). This PC will not be connected to the internet, so no worries about security.

I read that all I need to do is insert the XP disc, reboot from disc, and simply follow the steps. But is this truly the best way to make absolutely *sure* everything is gone? Weren't there special programs for formatting a PC?

You will need to delete ALL partitions and create a new one to load on. you will need to activate it at the Microsoft site, or it will lock up in 31 days.

When you get to the drive selection screen, remove all the existing partitions on the drive and create new ones.

That ensures it's totally "clean" with no leftovers.

Note that XP is fine online (as long as you have a decent antivirus and antimalware, as with any version of Windows).

Updates are still being produced for XP but tagged as for the business machine version... Set one registry bit and you continue to get them.

[MS complain it's "not tested" but quite a while on, there are no reports online of anyone having the slightest problem].

before you do all that - did you know that Windows 7 has something called "compatibility mode"
compatibility mode creates the environment of an older version of windows that will sometimes let older software work (for example I am using Microsoft office 2003 in compatibility mode on my windows 7 computer)
compatibility mode is built into windows 7 so there is no need to download anything - just do a little research on how to apply compatibility mode on that particular game
