Why was there less violence back in the 1950's than there is now?

Have you actually compared statistics on violent crime from then vs today? No? Then how do you KNOW there was less then? Hmm? How can you be sure that we don't simply hear about it more today? There's a lot more things different now than just video games, music & movies--e.g. since the late '80s it's been a constant, 24-h cable news cycle, and since the late '90s, almost instantaneous feeds on the web available all the time. In the 1950s, much more dependent on printed information sources, TV was in its infancy and radio news was pretty much restricted to major networks and the local farm report.

In fact, if you look at violent crime--you know, some actual NUMBERS--you see that it has steadily declined over the last 20 years.

There were 19 school shootings in the U.S. in the 1950's. While the number have increased tremendously since then, it wasn't a "virgin" decade by any means. The mentality of people was different in the 1950's than now. Vietnam destroyed our faith in the military. Nixon destroyed our faith in politics and government. The idea that people were more "church oriented" then is a right wing myth. They want us to regress to an age that didn't exist.

The crime rate in 1950 was 4.6 murders per 100,000 people. In 2014 (last recoded year I found) was 4.5.
As usual, people are completely delusional about the past.

There has been gun violence in North America since before the US even declared independence!

(It's because there are GUNS.....LOTS of guns!)

There was in fact MORE violence then.

There was also LESS reporting then. Times when someone went rogue and killed people it didn't make it farther than the fifth page of the newspaper a city over.

That's just not true. I mean, segregation was still in place in the 50s. It's the media..

Should add all the chemicals we are exposed to as well. It messes up your brain.
