The reaction, 2 NO(g) + O2(g) → 2 NO2(g), was found to be first order in each of the two reactants and second order overall. The rate law should therefore be written as:

Select one:
a. rate = k[NO]^2
b. rate = k[NO][O2]
c. rate = k[NO2]^2[NO]^-2[O2]^-½
d. rate = k[NO]^2[O2]^2
e. rate = k([NO][O2])^2

There are two reactants : NO and O₂
The reaction is first order in each of the two reactants means :
Rate ∝ [NO], when [O₂] is kept constant
and Rate ∝ [O₂], when [NO] is kept constant

The reaction is second order overall means.
Rate ∝ [NO] [O₂]

Hence, Rate = k [NO] [O₂]

Answer: b. Rate = k [NO] [O₂]
