Wishes are very real. The power to grant them or even influence them is imaginary.
Everyone your age has heard about the mystical power of 11:11 wishes. That stuff is right up there with all those other facts, like the illuminati (because who else would control the limited time of those limited-time-only specials at McD's) and the dead chick who lives in the bathroom mirror.
But what if your clock is fast or slow by a minute or two? And what if you're in another time zone? What about daylight savings, and which one of those do you use? Do you have to start wishing at 11:11, or is that when you have to finish wishing it? Do you get double the wishing power at 11:11 on your birthday? And what if you wish the same thing every day, but someone else is using their 11:11 wish to wish that your wish never comes true? The mighty wish-gods don't ever answer those questions, they just told other people (you don't know them, they're all friends of your friends) to make a wish at 11:11.
