Help with differential equations notation?

Isn t the notation dy/dx the same thing as f (x)? If so, then why can the dy and dx be split up and manipulated like they are each separate variables? I had always thought that dy/dx was just a way to represent "the derivative of y with respect to x"?
If I m wrong, can someone show me a proof for why? I m kind of confused...
