Why in the Army, AF and USMC does a Major outrank a Lt, yet a Lt General is higher than a Maj. General?

this came from George Washington's staff which had the rank of Sgt Major General the Sgt was dropped and the rank became only Major Gen. which is why a Major General is out ranked by a Lt. Gen.
