Pro s & Con s of Metrformin to treat PCOS?

I am a 22 year old who has been recommended Metformin by my Doctor to help with PCOS. I am not trying to get pregnant whatsoever. It s really hard trying to decide if it s worth taking or not as most of the information seems directed to women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. I was recommended this instead of the pill because it gave me horrible mood swings. I have gained a lot of weight despite eating much better and exercising, around 2 stone and although I am not obese, the Doctor would like to see me lose the weight I ve put on which I have been trying to do unsuccessfully. So far I have managed to maintain it which is better than gaining.

The main "con" is that adjusting to it can cause major stomach upset. I would recommend when you start it and each time you increase, you do so on a weekend or other time you have at least a day or two where you can be close to a bathroom. Metformin may aid weight loss, although in my experience the majority of that loss is in the first few weeks as the body goes through the adjustment and the patient ends up unable to eat much due to the GI side effects. Most women need to be on the full dosage at least 2-3 months before they see a change in cycles.

Thus far, there have been no studies showing serious negative side effects of Metformin. At worst, it simply doesn't induce ovulation.

Take it.
The con is that it takes about a month to get used to it, and you will feel pretty weird during that month, but the benefits are enormous.

I lost 3 stone without trying (and a further 4 stone with trying), and started having regular periods for the first time in my life. My excess hair has reduced significantly, and I am no longer always hungry.

It's not an easy option and it's not a quick fix, but it is definitely worth it.

After I went on metformin my periods stabilised significantly ("a cycle" went from being anything between 26 and 35 days to 27 to 29 days) and I started to actually lose weight, rather than gain or maintain, for the first time in years. I have experienced no ill effects at all.
