Unless very dilute, nitric acid is an oxidizing agent. The reaction between nitric acid and zinc depends on the concentration of nitric acid.

When concentration nitric acid is used, redox reaction occurs and nitrogen dioxide gas is formed.
Zn(s) + 4HNO₃(aq) → Zn(NO₃)₂(aq) + 2H₂O(l) + 2NO₂(g)

When dilute or moderately concentrated nitric acid is used, redox reaction occurs and nitrogen monoxide is formed.
3Zn(s) + 8HNO₃(aq) → 3Zn(NO₃)₂(aq) + 4H₂O(l) + 2NO(g)

When very dilute nitric acid is used, hydrogen gas is formed.
Zn(s) + 2HNO₃(aq) → Zn(NO₃)₂(aq) + H₂(g)
