Pros and cons of going vegan or vegetarian?

2016-07-23 11:07 pm
I'd be willing to go vegan or vegetarian, but I'm worried that I'll be stuck eating the same things or it'll be really expensive. Also, I'm 14 so I'd have to depend on my family getting enough vegetarian/vegan foods for me.

Vegan is a lot of work and really cuts down on what you can eat. You'd be surprised how many things have animal products in them - eggs in your pasta, milk solids in your ranch dressing, honey in any "natural" or "organic" desserts, fish sauce used in pretty much all Thai food, oyster sauce in Chinese food -- even vegetarian dishes, ghee used in vegetarian Indian food, etc, etc
If you are not shopping for yourself and are not aware of your nutritional requirements then being vegan can be very hard for you to get the nutrients, especially at your age when your body is developing and you need calcium and protein for strong bones and growth
Being a vegetarian is easier as long as you know how to get the nutrients you need. If you are not eating meat, then you need to find other foods to provide you with iron and protein.

You'll need to learn to cook. Going vegan Is actually a lot of work. Why not consider cutting back on the animal based foods to ease into it?

PROS:
Much healthier
Rewarding
Discover more food types
More aware of what's in your food and what you're consuming on a daily basis
Saves animals lives
Often cheaper

CONS:
May be inconvenient
People may not know and may feed you meat in a result of this
May crave meat
May be more hungry as salads don't fill you up as much

I recommend you watch some videos on the topic, but here are the pros:

Health, animal products are really unhealthy:
I recommend Forks Over Knives (can find it on Netflix)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-OzTWY2J8E

Also, on the topic of health, you can look up some of the work of people such as Micheal Greger, and John McDougall as examples. Or reading up on The China Study
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_China_Study

Environment, it's great for the environment:
I recommend you watch Cowspiracy to find out more (available on Netflix)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nV04zyfLyN4

Ethics, I recommend Earthlings (on YouTube)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3j0LyysECA
And
From Farm To Fridge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzrRmB40l00 (A 10 min video)

And make sure to watch Gary Yourofsky's speech
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es6U00LMmC4

Also price shouldn't be to big of a problem, a lot of the cheapest foods are vegan, rice for example. I think it's mainly the gourmet vegan foods that would be pricy.

Cons:
You may want to spend a little extra time researching how to get some nutrients, when not eating meat (and possibly not dairy and eggs)

Going vegan is work but it does the body great! I'm just a vegetarian because it's more socially acceptable you can go places and have more variety when your going out to eat with your family because vegans can't have cheese and it's hard to cut that down. I've seen the energy benifits and joint benifits and of now that's really it. Don't let people talk you out of it and if you fail at it keep trying don't give up it might take awhile!! You need to have vitamin B12 which you can find in vitamin waters or you could buy them online or at your whole foods market. Almonds and other vegetables that can supply you with calcium it certainly wouldn't hurt, do you research online and good luck!

Since you're only 14-years of age..........wait until you're an adult to do this. Right now, you're still a growing teen and your body needs all the protein and dairy for another 4-5 years.
