Hey I'm 16 and was rear ended today. The guy that hit me accepted full responsibility and reported the wreck immediately. I got in touch with the adjuster and she said they'll be paying for all the repairs and a rental car for me. I'm curious as to if this is even possible sense I'm only 16 years old,and I thought you had to be 25 to get one when you go on vacation or something. Do the rules change under these circumstances seeing as I'm the "victim?" I'll be calling Enterprise tomorrow to,in theory, set it up,and I'll ask,but I'm just a little curious as to if this is even possible. Thanks in advance!
No, the rules don't change when you're not at fault. The insurance company can agree to pay for a rental, but they can't force a rental company to rent out a vehicle.
You heard sort of correctly: Most rental companies will not let people under 25 years of age drive their vehicles. It's not a law or anything, the decision is made by each rental company. They own their vehicles, and a vehicle owner has first and final say over who can and cannot drive it. That means if Enterprise or any other rental company says you can drive their vehicles at 16, you can.
While the rules don't change, sometimes exceptions can be made. If Enterprise gets a whole lot of referrals from a particular insurance company, they might maybe possibly be willing to make an accommodation or two once in a while. Referrals are worth a whole lot in the car rental business, and I do mean a lot.
The only place you can get a for sure answer, however, is by calling Enterprise (or whoever) in your area and asking them. It's always the owner's decision.
NOTE: If you ask every rental joint in town and they all say no, there is still maybe another option. Maybe they'll rent a car do dad, and you can drive dad's car while yours is in the shop. That way everyone has a way to get around for the next few days, the insurance company doesn't care because it costs the same to them, the rental company still makes money, so everyone is happy.
OTHER NOTE: If they do rent a car to dad, don't drive the rental. As tempting as it will be (everyone likes driving the rental), don't do it.
The rules do not change.
The insurance company did not say they would fix your car and get you a rental car. They only said that they would pay for the repairs (if someone is willing to repair the car) and pay for the rental car (if someone is willing to rent a car to you -- which they won't be). In other words, you can't get a rental car; all they are really saying is that IF you could get a rental car, then they would pay for it.
The insurance co owes you a rental vehicle while you get your vehicle repaired. Not sure that they are going to find a co that will rent to you. You may be stuck with Bubba's Rent A Hunk of Junk.
NO rental company will rent to a 16 year old. But, you can have either mom/dad rent a car, and you use mom/dad's car till your vehicle is repaired.
But, under NO circumstances do you ever drive the rental, since if you do, then the contract is void, and (only) the driver (mom/dad) can drive the rental.
Maybe you have a deep voice and the insurance girl thought she was talking to an adult. Like Obi said your parent will likely be the one getting the rental as long as you don't drive it. Good question.
You won't likely be able to get a rental. You are too young.
The shop fixing your car "may" loan you are car, if they do it will be a beater. But it will be wheels while yours is in their shop. No rental agency will rent to you at 16, 25 is the age limit there.
You won't be getting a rental car. You are too young. Sorry, them's the rules.
Everyone above is right - no major carrier will rent a car to a 16 year old (or let a 16 year old drive their rented car). Here's a possibility though - some body shops have free loaners for customers. They don't usually have such restrictions, so call around. If you find one of those get your car fixed there and problem solved. Sure it will probably be a beater, but it will get you where you need to go.
OL...uh, no. You got in touch with the adjuster? BS. You're 16. This is for adults to handle and no rental company will let a 16 year old drive their car.
