Do cyclists have the right to ignore no left turn signs!?

There was a cyclist the opposite side of the road who got into the far left lane of traffic on a busy road and hand signaled a left turn; this whole intersection is no left turns (its New Jersey). Then when the light turns green, he doesn t yield to me and makes the turn anyway. Is this in any way right to do so on a busy road?

No, cyclists don't get any free passes on traffic laws. Many of them just think they do, and many other cyclists have no idea there even are traffic laws. All they know is they have a 'right' to be on the road, and that's where their knowledge of the law starts and ends.

Legally, they can't ignore traffic laws. If he wanted to make a left turn, he needed to get off the bike and cross as a pedestrian would. But many cyclists want all the rights and privileges of riding on the streets but feel the laws don't necessarily apply to them. I see violations every day.

NO. While most of them don't understand or won't admit it, bicycle riders are subject to the same laws and rules of the road as any other wheeled vehicle operating on public streets. About 90% of the time, when a bicycle and a car crash, it's the person on the bicycle that failed to follow the rules.

Sure! We all have the "right" to either follow or ignore traffic rules, but if we choose to ignore.........

Of course the rider was wrong, and that was illegal, but NO it doesn't give you the right to purposefully run him down. It does however remove your culpability if you accidently hit him.

No.

A person riding on a bicycle in NJ must obey all of the same traffic laws as cars. This includes obeying the signs at all intersections, and yielding to oncoming traffic when making left turns.

However, a person can go through the intersection on the right, stop at the corner, get off, turn left walk across the street like a pedestrian (pushing the bicycle), get back on it, and resume riding.

Of course not, they are required to obey the same traffic control devices as drivers are.

Cyclists should follow all traffic laws and obey traffic signs. He was in the wrong.

I'm in the UK and generally cyclists here are total arsoles.....and ignore just about every rule of the road there is.
Cyclists should be taxed, insured and forced to use dedicated cycle tracks.

If it says no left turns, then he broke the law. Bikes must follow ALL the same rules.

Cyclists by and large do what they want, and **** the traffic rules. Which is fair, really - the roads are their private playground, after all... >-|

No, unless they're in a designated cycle lane, with a separate filter lane for left turns.

pedestrians and bicycles do not yield to cars!

No, but there's not much you can do about it. The law frowns on running over bicyclists or pedestrians even if they're in the wrong.

No we don't.

cyclists don't have any road rights in my opinion. I bumped a guy once then flipped him off as he fell over because he would get out of the way. Too bad!

They don't have the right but with no registration number displayed what are you going to do.
2016-07-19 1:31 pm
His breaking the law gives you the right to run him over! Spandex and all.

NO way he did break the law .
