Take it to a mechanic and get it repaired the right way!
If you have drums in the back they may need help in the self adjusting department. Air may have gotten in the system via a leak somewhere.
I don't understand the bit about everybody else thinks it's fine. How is it that they think it's fine yet you have to push the pedal to the ground? It sounds to me as if the brakes may need bleeding as there may be air present in the flow or the fluid is losing its properties, for which job it is best to have an assistant to operate the pedal while you attend to the bleeding at each wheel. It is not really a job for a novice unless you have done it before.
Sounds like you need to bleed the brakes or replace the brake fluid depending on how old it is. It will not be brake pads causing the pedal to feel like that as they have been self adjusting for decades now.
Get your brakes inspected by a certified mechanic. Your brakes are soft because they may be failing. When was the last time you checked the level of your brake fluid?
Have a mechanic (hopefully an honest one) look at your car. You have some brake problem.
Worn pads at best, serious issues at worst.
