I have a dog, what do you think is a more humane way to put her down?

I have a Border Colie/Lab mix and she is very old now, she is peeing in the house and it drips out of her. And she also destroys stuff when we aren't home. I know that we have to put her down but I want to know your opinions on this. What do you think is more humane? It's either lethal injection which causes the body to become paralyzed and lungs stop moving causing her to suffocate. Or a gunshot, this would be instant death for sure and its out of a rifle moving at 2,570 feet per second and chambered in .303 British and places into the back of the head. What do you guys believe is morally right and more humane with less suffering

You DO know that incontinence can be stopped in 90% of dogs, right?

Why have you not taken her to the vets?

If you miss with a gun, how many times are you going to shoot her causing agony? Just have the vet do it.

euthanasia solution is NOT a paralytic. it's a narcotic anesthetic. the animal does NOT suffocate. the drug stops their heart. they sleep right through it. in my office we administer a heavy sedative intramuscularly so the animal doesn't even feel the i.v. placement.

the lethal injection only takes seconds. Often times, the vets also inject a sedative to help calm the dog before injecting the euthanasia drug.
A gunshot is only instant if you hit the right place. There is a chance of not aiming correctly and ending up with a seriously injured dog. I heard of someone who had to shoot their dog 3 times because the bullet did not hit the correct spot.

Take her to your vet and let him or her do it. Your local pound may also provide the same humane service.

Take it to a vet, discuss all options, possible treatments, prognosis, and quality of life, then put your feelings aside and have her euthanized by the vet, if there is no other alternative.

Her age has nothing to do with "destroys stuff when we aren't home."

It has to do with your lack of supervision, failure to correct when caught in the act, dog proofing your premises, put everything away so she can't access anything and failing to provide sufficient daily walks/elimination times, aerobic exercise such as playing fetch, and mental stimulation such as obedience training. An empty/tired dog is a good dog.

Take her to the vet for an injection, she wont feel a thing. A gunshot to the head is technically not an instant death, and she could move before you shoot her causing you to hit her somewhere much more painful. Even if you get her right in the brain she will likely convulse for around 10-20 seconds and it could be incredibly traumatic.
