why is carbon so important to biochemistry?

Because biochemicals are ALL carbon based. It's the only element that makes such long molecular chains of so many varieties with the help of other elements - hydrogen oxygen, nitrogen, etc.

Because nearly every compound in biochemistry is organic. Every organic compound contains carbon.
